Best Location for Street Photography in Nepal

Four times come and visit Nepal, I always spend my time to capture photos in the streets.
I feel Kathmandu and some cities in Nepal are still one of the best places to do street photography.

Below here is the best location to do street photography in Nepal.

1. Thamel
Thamel is the center area for tourist. A lot of stores built a long the way the street in that area. Also you could find may of hotels and home stay there.

2. Kathmandu Durbar Square
Kathmandu Durbar Square have several squares. We could move from one to another. Activities of people could captured there. Can find street hawkers, pedicabs, people riding bicycle  and most of them stay and enjoy there wait until night come down.

The best time to do street photo here in the afternoon, before the evening come down.

3. Palace in Kathmandu Durbar Square
Located in Kathmandu Durbar square, this Palace has its own inner courtyard.

4. Boudhanath
One of the biggest monastery in Kathmandu. Many pilgrims come and visit to Boudhanath to praying there. Circle walking clockwise and whispering their praying.

5. Pashupatinath
Pashupatinath is a complex of temples. It easy to find it on the northern-east part of Kathmandu near the Bagmati river. We could find many of holy men (shadu) there, especially in Hindu festival day. And also we can see ceremony of cremation beside of the river.

6. Swayambhunath
Another bigger monastery located a top of hill in Kathmandu valley. We have to climb up so many steps of stair to find it.

7. Patan Durbar Square
This square located in Lalitpur, one of an ancient city in Nepal.

8. Bhaktapur City
Another ancient city in Nepal, has 3 squares are: Nyatapola temple square, Durbar square and pottery square.

Tips & Trick: Low Light, Low Angle and Manual Focus Photo

Pada situasi tertentu kadang saya dihadapkan dengan keterbatasan kondisi. Contohnya ruang sempit dengan pencahayaan yang terbatas (low light). Beberapa trik diperlukan untuk mendapatkan foto dengan komposisi bagus.


Salah satunya adalah foto dengan pengambilan sudut rendah (low angle).
Foto low angle memberikan impact / hasil yang lebih dramatis. Sudut pandang pengambilan rendah menghasilkan subject yang terlihat lebih besar.
Sudut pandang rendah atau low angle dalam beberapa komunitas fotografi disebut juga sebagai perspectif mata semut.

Dahulu untuk menghasilkan foto low angle fotografer dituntut untuk membungkuk atau kadang malah tiarap. Sekarang pada kamera tertentu produsen kamera sudah mengeluarkan produk kamera dengan batuan swivel dan tilting LCD yang bisa ditekak-tekuk sehingga memudahkan fotografer pada saat memotret low angle.

Pada kamera yang tidak memiliki LCD yang bisa swivel dan tilting, dengan kondisi low light, berikut di bawah ini adalah tips dan triknya.

1. Pergunakan lensa semi wide.
   Pahami dan biasakan mempelajari cakupan / coverage focal length lensa tanpa harus melihat dari view finder.   
2. Ubah focusing di lensa menjadi Manual Focus.
   Hal ini berguna untuk menghindari pergeseran focusing pada saat kita menekan shutter.
3. Ukur jarak lensa terhadap subject yang akan potret.
   Setelah mengetahu jaraknya, putar focusing / set lensa secara manual di jarak tersebut.
   Ukuran focus manual bisa dilihat di pinggir seputar lensa.
4. Set ISO kamera kalian pada ISO 600.
   Pengaruh ISO rendah mengakibatkan kompensasi speed shutter yang rendah.
   Pahami kamera kalian kelemahan grain muncul pada ISO besar di angka berapa. Setting ISO, speed shutter dan aperture akan selalu berpengaruh terhadap ketajaman foto.
   Hal ini berubah tergantung situasi dan kondisi pencahayaan saat itu.
5. Taruh kamera di atas meja atau bagian yang statis.
   Hal ini untuk menjaga kamera tetap statis dan menghindari kamera shake yg mengakibatkan blur.
6. Ambil beberapa frame dengan mengubah / fine tuning focus sedikit-sedikit.

Exploring of Simply Practical Light

Doing photo shoot for model / fashion or concept photo are interesting photography activity and quite challenging for me. I'd prefer do approaching the ambient light rather than use flash or spotlight.
Ambient light or available light refers to any source of light that is not explicitly supplied by the photographer for the purpose of taking photos. The term usually refers to sources of light that are already available naturally (e.g. the sun, moon, lightning). source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Available light.

Ask the model closers to the lighting source, in this case the window. And try to keep some part of the subject hiding in the shadow. To fill in the darkest part of the subject use reflector.

Memotret model atau fashion dengan konsep merupakan aktifitas fotografi yang menyenangkan dan memberikan tantangan. Saya lebih memilih melakukan pendekatan ke cahaya ambient daripada menggunakan flash atau spotlight.
Ambient light atau available light mengacu kepada sumber cahaya yang secara sengaja disiapkan oleh fotografer untuk memotret. Hal ini biasanya mengacu kepada sumber cahaya yang sudah ada secara natural, seperti cahaya matahari, cahaya bulan dan cahaya lampu penerangan ruangan yang ada. Minta si model untuk lebih mendekat ke sumber cahaya, dalam contoh foto di atas adalah jendela. Dan usahakan agar sebagian dari model tetap "sembunyi" di bayang-bayang. Untuk "mengisi" bagian yang paling gelap, gunakan reflektor.

Continuing previous topic "Amelia: photo shoot without any proper preparation",
mentioned about the biggest challenge doing this photo shoot without any proper preparation are about dress. We couldn't predict kind of dress brought by the subject.

Do not to much worry, use your imagination, do some improvisation. In the picture above case, I knew that the dress is stretchable enough. I ask the subject to lower down the upper part. I prefer to expose the shoulder more, part of the body which can be give more impact to the image.

Menyambung topic sebelumnya Amelia: photo shoot without any proper preparation, saya sebutkan tantangan yang terbesar pada foto tanpa persiapan yang matang adalah busana. Kita tidak pernah bisa memastikan apakah jenis baju / busana yang akan dibawa oleh calon model kita.

Tidak usah terlalu dikhawatirkan, gunakan imajinasimu, lakukan beberapa improvisasi sebisa mungkin. Pada contoh kasus foto utama di atas, saya menanyakan apakah busana yang dipakai cukup melar. Kemudian meminta model untuk sedikit menurunkan bagian atas busana supaya bahunya bisa lebih terekspos. Pada kasus ini saya berpikir untuk mengekspos bagian bahu, bagian yang bisa menjadi penguat foto tersebut.

Sometime we just do photo shoot without any proper preparation. Below here are some step which I always do in that condition.

1. Put the concept in your mind
2. Contact he model, whether she available or not. Tell her about our background concept and ask her to bring several kind of dress base on our concept.
3. Looking for a suitable location with the concept. And the final approach is trying to do some adaptation about the location.  
4. Set up the existing props, while the model doing make up.
5. Check the available light in the location. I prefer use natural light rather than spotlight, lighting nor flash light. Use reflector to fill in the darker area.

The biggest challenge doing this photo shoot is about the model dress.

Perencanaan dan persiapan yang matang dalam sebuat sesi foto sebetulnya sangat diperlukan.
Terkadang karena kesibukan di pekerjaan kita harus melakukan sesi foto tanpa persiapan yang matang.
Berikut adalah tahapan yang bisa kita lakukan dalam kondisi tersebut.

1. Tentukan secara cepat konsep yang akan kalian foto. 
2. Hubungi model nya, apakah dia ada waktu luang untuk foto shoot atau tidak. Untung-untung dapat model good looking  sesuai dengan konsep yg ada di pikiran kita yang available.
   Note: daftar model menjadi penting sekali.
3. Jelaskan ke model tentang background konsep yang akan kita foto dan minta dia membawa busana yang sesuai dengan konsep tersebut.
4. Cari lokasi yang sesuai dengan konsep yang ada di pikiran kalian. Beradaptasilah secara cepat dengan lokasi setelah kalian berada dan melihat langsung lokasinya.
5. Set lokasi dengan props yang ada di lokasi pada saat model sedang make up. 
6. Periksa kondisi cahaya natural di lokasi (untuk kondisi tidak memakai lighting tambahan). Saya lebih memilih beradaptasi dengan cahaya natural dibanding memakai lampu tambahan atau lampu flash. Gunakan reflector untuk mengisi area yang gelap yang membutuhkan rim light.

Tantangan yang terbesar pada foto ini adalah ternyata si model membawa busana yang terbatas, sehingga harus sering sekali kita mengatur jatuhnya busana terlihat natural.
